Men’s Shaving advice

Here are a few thoughts about a man’s shaving routine

A man spends about 22, 000 hours in his life time shaving & shaves about 8.5 meters of beard in his lifetime.

The fact is that Mom’s spend time with their daughters teaching them about taking care of their skin & applying make-up. I guess Dad’s don’t give lots of advice on shaving as they weren’t given much advice from their Dad’s. My suggestion is that Mom’s take over if Dad doesn’t want to as your son’s need your attention & advice on shaving before they get into any bad shaving habits.

Here is some advice about shaving.

  • It’s better to shave after showering as the beard will be softened by the hot water & steam
  • Shave with the grain of the beard as this will prevent ingrown hair, don’t shave against the grain of the beard to avoid inflammation
  • Wash your face before shaving to remove any oil on the beard hair
  • Use a quality shaving product & quality razor
  • Fill your cheeks with air to expand the skin when shaving your most sensitive part of your face the lips
  • Use short stokes when shaving rather than long strokes
  • Rinse your face with cold water immediately after shaving to get rid of any shaving product & to tighten the pores
  • Use an aftershave or aftershave balm on your face & not an Eau de Toilette or Eau de Partum both fragrances which is meant to be strayed on the pulse points of your body.

After shave & aftershave balm is great for your face after shaving. After shave has less perfume oils & contains soothing & cooling ingredients. It acts as an astringent & antiseptic to help tighten the pores & helps to kill bacteria. Aftershave has less fragrance than a EDT or EDP.

The bad news is that not many brands have aftershave available in SA, here are a few that are available in SA, I recommend these three. Tabac has a fairly new fragrance Gentle Men’s Care a fresh scent & different to what your Granddad & Dad wore. Boss Bottled After Shave Lotion is an oriental/fougere scent & Issey Miyake L’eau D’Issey After Shave Lotion is a fresh/spicy scent. Remember that after shaves tones, soothes & softens the skin with less scent which will last between 2 to 3 hours.

I am particularly excited that they carry Eve Lom a cult skincare brand with a theme is less is more. The cleanser is a true classic & Vogue famously called it “probably the best cleanser in the world”

It’s also great to have Laura Mercier make-up available at last in South Africa. She is one of the world’s leading make-up artists who believes in a flawless face. Their concealers, foundations & powers are ideal for smoothing away any flaws that you might have.

Its great news to have Molton Brown the British bath & body specialists back in South Africa.

Stella Mc Cartney POP Bluebell EDP

I am really excited that Spring has started a little early this year, lets hope it stays that way. With this in mind Stella Mc Cartney POP Bluebell Eau de Parfum is just what we need. Its very unusual if you are looking for something different that will stand out in the crowd & cause a conversation this is the scent for you.  I can only say that is gentle & yet warm at the same time & great for Spring & Summer when you wear less clothing. It launched in store yesterday 14 August 2017 & is the 2nd of the  Stella Mc Cartney POP range.

The English Bluebell is an endangered species & it’s illegal to pick, POP Bluebell uses a special way to extract the distinctive scent without any damage to the plant. Its a floral/woody fragrance with tomato leaf, violet leaf & green mandarin in the top note. The heart which is the core & the most dominant part of the fragrance is bell flower, violet, tuberose & frangipani & the base notes which create the lasting impression & plays an  important part of the fragrance has sandal wood, cedar & musk. I find it difficult to describe other than different & that the woody notes are not overpowering. The packaging & bottle is lovey & easy to spray without removing a lid.

The name of the fragrance indulges in extremes. Paco Rabanne Pure XS builds up tension to the senses. An overdose of ginger, an explosion of vanilla & myrrh & a fresh, smouldering & fascinating oriental.

This fragrance can only be described as a vibrant, magnetic fresh oriental. It has two sensations on the edge, brushing, attracting & echoing each other.

Dior J’adore Injoy

You must be wondering by now what fragrances I don’t like, that question is hard to answer as I am exposed to so many beautiful brands & beautiful smells.

I fell in love with Dior J’Adore EDP when it first came out in 1999 & have followed the range over the years.

The latest launch Dior J’adore In Joy EDT is exactly that, meant to bring joy like Spring & Summer does. It’s a playful time of the year when one thinks of softer more natural make up & beautiful breezy clothing & frolicking in the sun in your flip flops & sun hat as you meander along Camps Bay beach in Cape Town.

Dior J’adore In Joy is a fruity/floral fragrance with an unexpected salty twist. It’s the 5th scent in the Dior J’adore collection. Its really womanly for the soft & gentle women who is truly feminine. Its like wearing a breath of fresh summers air with a dry down of a ripe & juicy peach for a fun, exhilarating & cheerful women. It’s a great fragrance for the spring/summer months when you are looking for a sunny radiant scent. In other words I can honestly describe this fragrance as a pick me up scent for those beautiful warm summer months.

Top notes of Sea salt

Heart is a bouquet of warm flowers of jasmine sambac, ylang-ylang, tuberose & neroli

Base note of a juicy ripe peach

I met up with a friend Mandy & one of the 1st things she asked me is what fragrance are you wearing, so for an EDT it does have staying power. I had been working on the post at around 11.30 & had sprayed the scent on my hand & I was with Mandy at 18.00. Mandy told me that she would be happy to wear Dior J’adore In Joy all year round. It just goes to show that there are no hard & fast rules to fragrance today, you can wear whatever you want whenever you want depending on your mood & where you are going on the day or night.

Try Dior J’adore In Joy when you next go shopping & you will be pleasantly surprised.
